Grafting your own?
« on: January 06, 2014, 19:54 »
Having seen good reports from grafted cucumbers and aubergines I'd quite like to have a go at doing my own.

Has anyone tried?

TIA

Not yet but have got the bits ready....

Going to chuck a few aub seeds in the propagator soon to get them to a decent size before growing the rootstocks (Ageis and I'll try a few Roma).  Will also have a go at a cue.  Not got a clue what I'm doing....

Thats the fun of trying I guess.

I'm too lazy to try this year -I'm buying my grafted aubs and cukes - worth every penny for the crops I got ;)

I didn't get on very well with grafting toms but it's always fun to play mad scientist  :D

I bought the grafting stuff from Moles Seeds, they have F1 Triumph for Cuke root stock but I can't see anything for aubergines.

RHS says it's the same rootstock as for tomatoes
Quote
Rootstocks and scion material for vegetables
In principle, rootstocks are divided into two groups:

Solanaceae rootstocks for tomatoes, aubergines, sweet and chilli peppers. The commonly available for the amateur gardener are: Tomato F1 Aegis and Estamino F1.
Cucurbitaceae rootstocks for cucumbers, melons and watermelons. The most commonly available for the amateur gardener is Cucumber ‘Triumph’.

I got my clips and Aegis seeds from www.sowseeds.co.uk.  6 of each came to £5 inc postage.
