Can chooks travel
« on: June 19, 2009, 13:08 »
We are seriously thinking of moving back to Wales (fishguard) in the next couple of yrs, i know its a long way off but just out of interest can chickens travel.    The journey from here in northern ireland to fishguard going by the Rosslier to Fishguard ferry, total journey 6hrs, would it be something they could cope with.    nickyx

Yes they can travel. 6 hours should not pose a problem to them.

Norn Iron is part of the UK so you won't need travel documents for them as far as I know.

I'm sure you will anyway, but just make sure they have access to water and food regularly and they'll be fine :)

wrt cat carrier - we took ours up to nottingham in a cat carrier - make sure it's a big one and put straw in it so they don't get moved around too much.
give them plenty of air too and if you can get something wet then they'll appreciate that too (not a drink of water, because it's too messy): but ours did take some water off our fingers: so maybe a sponge or something similar.
they won't need to eat or drink. but it's good to be able to keep them cool.

Acksherly they manage without food for 6 hours easily and water too, well mine do . In winter they are in the house without visible means of support from 5pm to 7am. Although one of those little pop bottle converters would be handy if they are in a wire cage that can support one.
3 o'clock is both too early and too late to start anything - Sartre said so.
