I'm having problems worming our chooks...
« on: July 27, 2013, 20:40 »

I've started worming our chickens with the usual Flubenvet mixed into their food.

But....

I got a new bag of feed a few weeks ago, not my usual BOCM Pauls feed, but a bag of Lloyds feed. I noticed a difference with this feed, as the pellets were bit longer than the BOCM feed.
Thought nothing of it, until I started feeding them... They would rake out the WHOLE feeder!!?  >:(

I've since been taking a precaution and stood the feeder in a tray to stop it scattering everywhere and being wasted.

They've done it yet again, but it has the wormer mixed in this time.

Can I just put the feed back into the hopper, for them just to do it again, or let them eat the feed out of the tray until that lot is finished?
Could the possible down side be maybe is the worming period may take longer, because they're being 'picky'?

What else can I do...?

I know it's a faff, but could you grind up the pellets for a week and mix into a paste/mash with the flubenvet?

Just a thought.  Others will know better, I'm sure! ;)

Tried the ready mixed pellets once, I wasted more than them.  :(

I know I maybe being cruel to be kind - to get them wormed, I think I'll just have to let them eat the pellets out of the tray....

I think it is always best to introduce new feed mixed in with a little of the old so they get used to the change.  I know this is not always possible.  As others have said, if they are not offered anything else they will start to eat the new food.  You may have to add a couple of days on to your treatment if they did not eat enough on the first two days.

I have to keep my girls in the run with just their treated pellets to eat and nothing else when worming them (no treats, no free ranging, no nothing!) - they complain like mad for about 3 days and then settle down and start to eat the pellets.  As Sassy says, they do eventually crack and start to feed on the pellets (whether in the feeder or scattered underneath!) although the complaining is quite loud at first!

I prefer to mix my own pellets and flubenvet powder so I can mix exactly how much I need - I found the pre-treated pellets a false economy as I didn't use them in one go and by the time I needed to worm again, they had gone out of date so I didn't want to use them (the active ingredient loses its efficacy so there is no point in using the pellets if you want to be sure the chickens have been wormed properly). My girls also didn't like the pre-treated ones so I found I had more chance of getting them to settle down and eat the treated pellets if I mixed their usual ones with the flubenvet powder.

I cut grapes in half and dust them with the flubenvet, each hen gets an equal share.
Only takes a few minutes and no waste

I think they're starting to 'crack' today. Came home from work, and saw a good 'hole' being made into the spilt pellets.  :)

Guess I will add on a couple of days to the treatment ANHBUC  ;), just to make sure.

what about the 7 day rule, two extra days shouldn't hurt will it?

They do recommend a second treatment within a few weeks for a really bad worm burden so I would not think that a few extra days is going to be a problem.

They've finally finished the treated pellets.

I think I'll leave it for now, for a few weeks, and then treat again, to 'break the cycle' if any worms are still there...

Would it be OK to use their corn dusted with the wormer instead of the pellets? They go mad for that, more than their pellets!  ::)

hi G/F

I use hulled sunflower seeds and flubinvet

just put a small portion of seeds in a tub with a lid - shake it all up and the flubinvet sticks a treat to the seeds
you can see it all coated in flubinvet dust

chooks go mad for it when you put it in the bowl

don't let them gorge on it to long - just enough to get a decent dose down them

I think it is better to use half a grape per bird with the flubenvet on the cut side.  I have one bird in the run at a time so no pinching someone elses grape.  If I put any sort of treat in with my birds there would only be the greedy ones that got any and then they would have had more than one dose.   :nowink:
