like cabbage, PSB, kale, swede, winter cauliflower and savoys. Look out for modules of Brussels sprouts if you forgot to sow them earlier.
Somebody forgets every year ::) So I thought I'd put a reminder up.
-
Excellent reminder :) I sowed mine this year but for the first time - I usually forget!
-
Thanks Mum!

most of my calabrese, summer psb and kale got eaten. Stupid slugs! re-sowed today so guess I will just get a later crop if this lot don't get eaten.

This very much applies to me ::)
I live in the hope that my broad beans will have finished by now, and I will be able to plant some winter veg in their place. Of course they never have ::) By the time the beans come out it's a bit too late for winter veg, but I try anyway, that's why I never have any luck ::) ::)
I have tried sprouts for the last 2 years with zero success, so they're out
I have a very small patch of ground, maybe 2m x 1m that has nothing in it . It's under a silver birch tree whose lowest branches are about 15' off the ground, the trunk is about 6-8' away, it's south facing in front of a fence, sort of between the birch & my dwarf cherry ( another resounding failure :( )
Perhaps I should try PSB. Would planting some seed next week be too late....or should I find some modules, what do you think?
-
Sow the winter veg in pots or modules, so you can plant later, after the beans.

Assuming you are referring to early PSB, my seed packet says sow in May or the start of June, so around now is about the right time. Modules or direct sowing is fine, although if you have pest problems with brassicas on your plot starting in modules would be best.
-
I didn't forget - the first lot died off and I fried the second sowing in a hot closed greenhouse ::)
Good luck sowing number 3 ;) :D

Third time lucky! Fingers crossed :)

I'm rather a brassica clever cloggs this year with everything looking like real food. Curly kale already doing it's stuff and the nero kale just gone out. Swede already in and being attcked by flea beetle as usual but should pull through with substitutes ready to come on if necessary. Likewise with waiting for the Autumn broad beans to finish so I can plant my PSB that are looking fine waiting in 5 inch pots... one of my favourite foods, broad beans, yet it's funny how I can dislike their presence if they're taking too much time and space.
Thanks for the reminder re the caulis. Have relented and gone against my better judgement and sown a few today. I just know they'll rain on my parade. I doubt if it's the done thing but they are earmarked for the spaces left by the summer cabbages that I'm already harvesting. I might be wrong but can't see why two quick brassicas should be any worse pest wise than a long term brussels crop.

I planted out my psb seedlings about 4 weeks ago. They're growing well under the enviromesh and are about a foot high.
Did I plant them out too early or will they still produce at the right time next year?
-
Most normal PSB are a two year plant and need to go through the cold weather thing to set them on their way to producing. There are some early ones now that can start in November and crop through Mid-Winter. Depends on the variety you have.
-
Thanks for the reminder, there's always so much else going on at this time of the year it's easy to forget. I always forget to sow wallflowers, sweet williams, and spring cabbage, so you've just reminded me to do it.
-
is it time to sow the veg we intend to eat for our Christmas dinners ? also what varieties do you sow for your winter veg :)
hope your all doing well

Many thanks for the reminder. I've never done winter veg before because I just have a little space but planting a few can't hurt can it?
-
Its on my list for today! Thanks - I thought I might be too late, but looks like I'm not - yey! x

Thanks for the reminder, Mum. I'll go and sort the seeds out now :D

Thanks for this reminder as a newbie this thread is great. However it did take a few minutes to work out what PSB was short for
-
That's it - just sown some caulis, PBS and spring cabbage.

Got two lots of cabbage sowed and then someone needed a snack. Will try again in a bit ::)
