Raspberry suckers
« on: March 29, 2012, 12:59 »
Last year I planted 9 Raspberry canes - 3 early, 3 summer and 3 autumn.  The summer and autumn ones fruited (hooray) but the early ones just seemed to whither and die. I kept track of the fruiting canes in the hope I didn't chop down the wrong ones!

Now, I have raspberry suckers appearing all over the place, several feet from where any of the canes were planted. So how do I work out which sort of raspberry they are - and how on earth do I keep track of which ones to keep / cut down....

Can't bear to cut down the suckers just yet - they're the only crop I managed to get more than a handful from last year!!

Any suggestions gratefully received  :D

Well you still know where each type was planted (I hope) so just prune each third as you should
I know there may be some overlap, but you won't be far wrong will you  ;)

Ah well...yes...kind of....

I'm new to this and I thought as I had 9 plants I'd plant them "in formation" so they'd look nice and wouldn't all be against the fence where my neighbours said the birds would "eat em all!" I did space them accoriding to the instructions (just about) and installed poles and wires.

So they're planted as below with strawberries in the middle

                     O         Early
Early           O  O       Early
Autumn     O      O     Summer
Autumn   O          O   Summer
Autumn O              O Summer

I guess I could assume the back 1/3 are Earlies (and did survive afterall), anything left of centre is Autumn and Right is Summer? Or just watch when they fruit and cut them at the same time as the "known" canes...yup!

Thanks mos - just needed to think it through before hitting the newbie forum panic button!
