growing sweetcorn
« on: January 03, 2019, 21:19 »
Don't worry, I'm not starting yet!

Where should I put my sweetcorn?
my plot is under trees, with SW being on the left looking down the plot.

My Munty Frame will be half way down on the left, and I've got a wide metal frame a third down.

Does it need to be in full sun?
I know it needs to be a square, so I'm ready for that.
Thanks!

It doesn't need sun all day, but I'd certainly grow in on the sunnier side of your plot  :)

Which side is that?
I've only had it since October - I've not seen sun yet!
On the same side as the Munty Frame?

Also, should I put manure on top once I've dug the ground over?

The trees on the top E>S boundary will throw shadow longest in the top left-hand side of your plot, according to your plan drawing.
So bottom half in the diagram will be sunniest, or failing that I'd put them just above the frame on the top, right-hand side.

If the soil is fairly free of weeds, I'd just put manure on top and leave it for the worms to take down. If the soil is too soft, after digging, sweetcorn can blow over in a high wind.

Perfect, thank you.

Unfortunately I do have to dig as the plot is mainly bindweed with a little bit of soil. But the sooner I do it, the more compacted it will become with the rain (oh yeah there's loads of clay too!)

I have a shaded plot too, although mine is shaded in the afternoon rather than the morning.
Personally I've found sweetcorn a great grower. It does tend to grow taller than my neighbours corn, but it's no less resilient or productive than everyone else.

Not if you do no dig, check out a few threads on here, Johns diary entry on no dig & Charles Dowding’s website.

I don't want to do no-dig, thanks!
Digging is the only thing I'm actually any good at, I quite enjoy it, and it's good for my core muscle and arm strength
