Rose with a clerical twist
« on: August 14, 2008, 10:40 »
I am looking for a very special rose, can anyone help please?

We live in a lttle village in Surrey called Brockham, which is famous for many things- its bonfire night celebrations probably being the most noted. However the village had a very famous vicar called Revd Alan Bellingham Cheales.

The Rev Cheales was a life-long horticulturist and antiquarian and along with the late Dean Hole was a pioneer of a little band of rose enthusiasts, who ultimately founded the National Rose Society. He was a great authority on roses, one variety having been by permission named "the Rev. Alan Cheales,' while another "the Lady Dynevor" was developed by him. He was chairman of the Cottage Allotment Fund started in 1861 and of the Betchworth and Brockham Horticultural Society.

We would love to have an example of both varieties in the church memorial garden, but have had no luck in sourcing them. It is possible that they are no longer grown, but perhaps someone on this site many know of a supplier.

Any help would be greatly received.

Regards

I know your village as I was born in Dorking.  I have just looked your Rev: on google and I wonder if he was ever anything to do with the Cheals G. Centres around this way.  (I think Cheals became Hilliers GC's)
Sourcing those roses sounds very specialist and a good challenge.  Good luck with your search, I will let you know if I can find them.  Mrs Bouquet

Have you tried the rose nursery at Ditton on the A3? They might be able to help, Failing that, you're going to have to visit or write to estates with large collections to see if it's included. If it is, it might be possible to get a cutting from it. A long shot, I know, but it might just pay off.
