jars for bottling
« on: March 31, 2009, 16:39 »
I plan to bottle home-made tomato puree this summer, in my pressure cooker. Does anyone know, do I have to use the jars with rubber seals, or will any screw top jar do?

I get people to save jars from pasta sauces for me and I can get an airtight seal in them.

yes, you want the ones with the raised domes in the middle. Then if the dome flattens you know they are airtight :)

I just use old jars - I get friends and work mates to save them.

Loyd Grossman pasta sauce jars are good, but anything really, as long as they hold one serving.

Same with Jam Jars, Mum saves the fancy ones from M & S etc (pensioner - go loads of ££££££ to shop at M & S)

Wilkos had some nice strorage jars befor Christmas (the old fashion type with a rubber seal, ranging from £1.50 to £3.00 i think)

Have just borrowed a book off workmate on Preserving - dates back to the early 70's, will let you know whats in it, it's a MAFF book so should be good.

Happy bottling

A pressure canner will put incredible stress on bottles so be sure to use the strong type that are either made for bottling or appear to have been bottled like pasta sauce bottles. Thinner glass ones will simply shatter and waste your hard efforts. Water baths put less stress on bottles but pasta sauces are best when pressure canned.

That's good news, I get through loads of pasta sauce so have been saving the jars, should have loads by tomato harvest time.
Thanks everyone.
