Dumb question about poultry sellers
« on: May 27, 2010, 09:56 »
I looked at what hybrids the chap I buying from has and concluded what I though he would have in the way of purebreds.

However when I asked about this he said he didn't have purebreds - he specialises in hybrids for egg production.

Now I'm confused.  How does he get his birds if he doesn't have purebreds to breed the hybrids from?

Thanks Sally,

Would that mean he has a lot of cockerels to dispose off?
Here's the list of what he has.  Not sure which of these you could sex at a day old.

Amber Star
White Star
Black Star
Gold Star Ranger
Columbine
Blue (Bluebelle)
Sussex Star
Speckled Star
Copper Black (Maran?)
Coral (Nick?)

I've no idea which ones are sex linked.  GrannieAnnie, Joyfull or others may do though.

if he is buying as day olds from large commercial hatcheries as egg layers then he will buy just girls, if they aren't colour sexed then some employ people who can vent sex them (this is not easy to do and these people earn good money). The odd boy will still slip through the net but most boy chicks are disposed off straight away  :(
Staffies are softer than you think.

Not sure if this helps, but I saw a movie on youtube or similar of factory farming & they showed chicks on a conveyor belt in their 1000's with ladies selecting the female chicks so fast it was unbelievable!  They were disposing of the boys (don’t ask about that bit) .

They didn’t seem to be sex/colour linked & to my untrained eye - the ones that went through as girls looked just like the rejected boys!

I assume from this then that as joyful says the hatcheries must be able to pick em out like this too.
