Exploding Buffy Ball Squash!
« on: October 03, 2016, 19:02 »
I punctured the very hard shell and put it in the microwave.

After a couple of minutes

You can imagine the mess inside - I've never had a squash do that before

What a mess that must have been

I've cooked 2 in the oven tonight without mishap, but that was on a much gentler heat than a microwave would produce.

Even when I'm going to end up roasting squash whole, I usually soften them a bit in the m/w first. I won't be doing that again in a hurry, though   ::)

I bet you won't.  I don't have a microwave at home, so I haven't tried that method, but I think my squashes this year are a bit different.

The Buffy Ball are very hard skinned and there seems to be a lot more seeds and pulp in the middle of them.  The spaghetti squash also have very hard skins, but I haven't cut into one yet.  They all seemed to finish the season early as well.  I only have a few tromba left on the plot and I think they will be in this week, as the plants are about done.

Maybe a reaction to less than ideal growing conditions for most of the year
