Summer raspberries
« on: October 29, 2011, 17:02 »
HELP please! Cut down my summer fruiting rasp. canes as usual in Sept. Tiesd in the new green ones. They have all fruited - huge tastless raspberries and are now the canes are brown and there are no new green ones.  I guess I won't get a crop next year. Right?
Thanks in advance for advice  :(

Summer fruiters will surprise you with more canes, just not when you want or expect them. By spring you'll see more new shoots come up.

If the fruit is tasteless, then you need to feed them now. Any sort of rotted manure is good, and be generous. This will also help encourage more shoots for spring. Nothing will fruit again this year so don't worry about that aspect.

Thanks, Trillium. Had no idea they would make yet more canes. Will feed them too.

Over the last few days, I've been moving and replanting about forty summer fruiters Squirrel.

I'd already pruned this year's fruited stems, (they were all in a bit of a state), but most of them have new shoots just appearing at the base.

Obviously, some will take a bit of time to get going, but it was either that, or losing the lot, and I want to see what they do first!
