Name that Tree!
« on: April 28, 2014, 12:53 »
Hi
Can anyone identify the tree that I have? It looks a bit like a conifer but in the shape of a tree. In spring, bright red blossom appears on the tips of each branch. Hopefully the attached photos are clear enough. I have only attached one but I'll add another post with a close up.
Thanks

Hi Caroline

I've just merged your piccies into one thread so it's easier for people to look at the two piccies together.

Not sure what the tree is, though...
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks Yorkie!
Yeah, I can't find the tree in any books that I have.

The close up picture is exactly like Cypress flowers, and the foliage matches too. Not sure which one though, but it is at least a start  :D

If you enlarge the picture, the flowers do not look cone shaped, but the tree outline could be a spruce perhaps. Hmmmmm

Now I have had a good search: Chaemaecyparis lawsoniana seems to have the right foliage and the right flowers (bear in mind it will have two kinds -- male and female and the female ones would be small roundish cones)

Link above and the photo I saved

What do you think?
