ive been thinking of gettin some RIR's as 19 of my hens wre killed by the fox. websites ive looked on say utility rhode island reds and i was wondering wot the UTILITY means. other than this does anyone have any reasons 2 get them and not 2 get them. Thanks Luke

i dont have pets sally ,,,,,, even my dogs werking ones  cats clear mice or leave home ,my ferrets  catch rabbits llo

Utility usually means not "show type".  Many show lines have had the production values bred right out for the sake of "pretty". Think show dog vs. the one still in the field doing what it was ment to do.

I was of the eating opinion too!  Must admit, if I did (like I used to) I would eat my birds - at least you know they have had a good life, not like broilers etc, and also they have been fed correctly.  Good free-range meat.
