Title: Poor spark how do I get this off ?
Post by: richyrich7 on June 17, 2007, 16:38
On my petrol strimmer I'm only getting the odd spark when I yank the starter,
I've taken the outer casing to the pull start off and have taken off the brass coloured nut you can see but how do I get the plate off it looks as though it's threaded ?
As it looks as though there's a set of points or something behind.
Cheers

what strimmer? looks like it could be from japan.
i'm not sure that it will be threaded, more likely to be a tapered shaft with a woodruff key to stop it from moving. i reckon you will need a puller to get it off without any damage.
any more photo's so i can be certain? :D

It says kazz industrial on the shaft, with Mitsubishi on the end of the engine, carb says nikkki .

I got it off freecycle the lady I got it off said it used to work ok but they left it standing and now it don't.

Don't know if this pic is any good, I took the bolt right off and couldnt see how it came off after that. Like I said it's only sparking occasionally so I'm assuming it's an electrical fault.

If you want some more pics I can do them tomorrow after work, let me know what you want to see.

If you unscrew the nut you will be able to see if the pulley has a slot in to to accomodate a woodruf key. If it has you will probably need a puller, however you could try screwing the nut back on a couple of threads and striking the end with a mallet to try and "shock" it off the shaft. It may also help to pour boiling water over the pulley to expand it off the shaft before using the hammer or mallet. If however  the shaft threaded as you think be careful  taking off the nut, depending on the rotation it may be a left hand thread.

I would be very careful with the hammer. That disc looks a zinc alloy to me and will easily crack. Once the nut is off i expect it will only be a case of pulling gently with your fingers.

I've taken the nut off, normal thread, can't see a woodruff key either.
I tried to ease that disc off with a screwdriver    earlier but it won't budge. I wondered if it would be threaded on ? if so how would you stop the shaft rotating do I take it to bits from the other side and hold it there whilst I try to unscrew the disc ?

hold the disk in your hand and give the shaft a light tap with a hide/rubber mallet,be suprised if its threaded give a good dowsing in wd over night

try and find a thin nut of the same thread. Tighten to two nuts (thin one onto the shaft first then the one you took off) together on the shaft and leave a little gap to unscrew the plate. use a spanner on the nut and a strap on the plate. I doubt it is screwed on.
If that fails gently warm the plate with a soldering torch again warm not heat as it will melt. It should expand a lot for little heat and pull off.
