If you want to be happy for a short time - get drunk.

If you want to be happy for a long time - fall in love.

If you want to be happy forever - take up gardening!

Wilkinsons - as ever!

Jamie: ask your mum which herbs she actually likes, check out the area she wants to grow them in (near the kitchen is usually a good idea but not if it's the shadiest part of the garden), and then have a think about which are perennials and might be better bought quite cheaply from a garden centre in small pots to get them started. Annual herbs from seeds can be started anytime soon and I wouldn't bother shopping around for them; they are not expensive.

There are a lot of herbs to choose from and most like sunny locations and well-drained soil but that doesn't mean you should be too unkind to them! There are a few which will tolerate or even prefer moister conditions (parsley springs to mind,) and a few which if your mum really likes them would probably be better grown indoors where you are in Wakefield (basil, for example.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

and if she chooses mint then grow it in a pot sunk into the ground.  It can be a real thug

Thanks for the advice :) I think that the ones she uses most are:

Parsley,
Mint,
Basil,
Chives,
Corriander.

I sowed the basil a while back and they are doing well. I will do what you say with the mint :) The chives I have seem to be doing well aswell :)

Don't discount the growing herbs in supermarkets, those pots are a mass of seedlings, ready to be split into several plants. Best to use the tops first or they flop everywhere. I have got parsley, chives, basil and mint growing nicely. The mint and chives have been in a few years and are prolific. I put parsley in every year as it is really a bi-annual, and basil is tender so needs to go in every year too, often they can be bought bogof this time of the year. Hope this helps.
