New Raised Beds and Some Old Compost?
« on: March 06, 2012, 15:32 »
Hi All

I went over the top growing spuds last year and have lots of half dead compost.
This year I have a few raised beds which I have filled with half old spud compost and half new compost.

Im looking to grow onions and garlic in one and hopefully brassicas in the other.

Do I need to add some lime to one of them, ive already added some chicken pellets etc.

Any help muchly appreciated
Mattie

Brassicas prefer a pH of 6.0 - 7.5 and garlic pH 5.5 - 7.5,  onions pH 6.0 - 7.0.

HOWEVER.  .  .  .you will have trouble if you lime and add pellets at the same time.

Always here to help  ::)    Cheers,     Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I'd try to get some topsoil/loam into the beds as well as compost - give the soil some body...compost won't hold the nutrients that well
