Converting a panel door to a glazed door
« on: July 04, 2009, 15:32 »
I'm busy doing up the kitchen and wondered if I could take the wood panels out of this door and replace them with glass.  I can't find a glazed door to match my old ones and this seemed like a good idea.  Anyone see problems?

Cheese makes everything better.

My kitchen door is the same, but glazed :D Go for it Ice!!
But please make sure that the surface of your putty ends up a lot smoother than on this door
Wasn't me...really it was not

No putty will be involved, the smell makes me puke. :(  It would certainly allow more light into the dark kitchen via the front door.  Plus, I have no money left to buy a new one.

Cant see any probs there. You'll probaly break the beading getting tho old glass out but its cheep enough to get new stuff. Also use safety glass if possible Ice

mmmmm not sure I'd jump in just yet Ice.

You'll probably find those are just ply panels rebated in the styles - they will be a PITA to remove without dismantling the door. If you're replacing with glazing you'll need at least 4mm safety glass although Id probably like something thicker if there are youngsters around.

Wickes do reasonable doors new (and deliver). They'll be correct to all the BS's and its really not that much bother to fit a new door.

Something like this http://www.wickes.co.uk/Newland-8-Lite-glazed-Pine-Interior-Door/invt/200548 would be nice.

Check the door - is it beading ?

Darn it, it's ply about 3mm thick.  I'll have to see if I can find a door the same style so they all match.  Life is never easy.

I think that's why they put putty in my door, cos there wasn't room for the beading  :(

we converted a few of these years ago and what i did was using a router cut the beading of on the one side because a lot of these doors used moulding instead of bead ,this means its part of the door not seperate .Its all made on spindle moulder things then fixed together including panels ,if you know someone who,s handy with there tools then it shouldnt be a problem as i said set the router to the depth of the panel and cut the moulding of leaving a square edge fit the glass and get some shop bought beading and use silicon instead of putty ,hope that helps

Thanks Phil, it is moulded and not beaded.  I understand what you mean about using a router, just don't know anyone at the moment who could do it.  I'll have a good think as a new door is a bit too expensive at the moment.

If you do put glass in make sure the gaps around it are filled with silicon mastic . If you don`t the door may sag under the extra weight .
