i'd like a living den of some discription in the future a hazel wigwam or dome or similar in my orchard. Is it possible to make something waterproof with just natural materials. I'm no thatcher.

Whilst it would be possible to make a waterproof den I don t think it will remain alive The best ones I have seen are made from willow which is easy to root and can be easily woven to make a nice summer den but it will lose its leaves in winter other wise its more of a hazel pole and perhaps a turf roof ?

and another, huge problem with using willow is not only will it root, but the roots will quickly become massive and run everywhere, making the whole structure a nightmare headache. The wise will avoid using willow, especially in a small area.

Not had any experience with hazel or other twigs but it's unlikely many will live unless cut and rooted at the right time.

I made this last Saturday, it should take. It was to cover corner where compost etc dumped. You could make waterproof if you weave enough willow. Very easily made. Or if you trimmed top, you could throw nice tarp over when raining and want to go inside!!
