early spuds in tunnel
« on: December 14, 2011, 16:01 »
Hi, I want to grow some really early spuds in the tunnel.Does anyone know where I can get some seeds in Dec or Jan. Our onsite shop doesn't get them in till March. Is it worth doing this or will the few extra weeks growing them be a waste of time?

Merry Christmas to everyone.  :)

Some of the shops and nurseries or garden centres should be getting them in by January. In previous years I have also seen them on eBay early in the year. Mine are ordered from Garden Organic and I expect they will have arrived by then.

Quite a lot of places will start to put seed potatoes on display by mid-January, giving you plenty of time to get them chitted before planting.

I started planting first earlies in containers in the greenhouse on Feb. 17th this year and picked my first meal of them on April 29th, well over a month earlier than any from the plot.

I'm going to give this a try in my polytunnel. What did you use as growing medium, soil or compost?

When I grew some spuds in the polytunnel, they weren't as prolific as the outside ones, but that could have been because I didn't water them enough.  But what I did notice was that they had no scab or anything on them.

Well worth a try if you have the room in the tunnel!  Good luck you lot!
