i got exactly the same from one of my girls a month or two ago - it looked like the whole of her insides had given way. She was in distress for a few days - I have wormed her , given calcium supplements, recycled egg shells etc and given food that the others seem o.k with  but she hardly ever seems to lay an egg with a proper shell. She doesn't seem to get as upset now even though she only sems to lay soft shelled eggs

I am so pleased that we don't buy ham in that thin-slice, piled up preprocessed form any more. I'm not sure I'd be able to cope with lunch-time sandwiches at work after reading this thread.  :tongue2:

One of my ex bats laid a lash today but before I could examine it one of the others ate it!  I've had my girls just over a year an this one (called Oven-ready) has just moulted and refeathered.  In fact she looks the best that she ever has and even has frilly knickers now!  Fingers crossed that there's no more problems with it.

You must put grit in with the food, the chickens need grit in their diet to ensure nice hard shells on their eggs.

In the wild hundreds of years ago chickens would have picked up grit naturally with the worms and grubs they eat from the soil, you provide the food artifically and so need to provide the grit too - just mix it up with their food, you must by proper chicken grit and not use grit produced for any other manufacture.

We had 8 hens for years and it was my job to look after them, never saw anything like this but then we always put loads of grit in with their food.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice.  We had the crushed shell grit in a grit tub for them to eat but they never really bothered with it.  We now mix it in with thier food mash and since then we have not seen anymore lash eggs.

I always provided my foreign finches and other aviary birds with cuttlefish-bone and grit... I dare say chickens have to have a high calcuim in-take too.

Just as an observation...... no Idea what I am rambling on about!!

Perhaps I wasn't rambling on incoherently after all?  :)
