Hi, does anybody know what this is on my tomato, I have been growing it outside un a warm area under a plastic bottle. The plant has been looking very healthy apart from today when I started to see these yellow leaves?

It looks like scorch to me, but, may I ask if you smoke?

No, it is kept outside under plastic so could it just be burnt?

It`s scorch, then. Thought there was an outside chance it could me mosaic virus, but as you don`t smoke it`s highly unlikely. :D

I have 3 large tomato plants growing in a small greenhouse and the temperature each day lately has reached 100 degrees F. The temperature in a plastic bottle must exceed this.
Your picture indicates a mature plant leaf so what sort of plastic bottle are you using?
Daytime temperatures are OK it is the night temps that need protection, but the chance now of frosts are negligable considering the long range forecasts.
I think you are doing more harm than good.

re the smoking issue; how does this cause mosaic virus? Is it the nicotine or just the smoke. Would having plants in a room with an open fire run the same risk? Interesting, and something I had never heard of before.

Mosaic virus is also known as tobacco mosaic virus and is found in tobacco plants and other members of the solanaceae family, like tomatoes and potatoes. Presumably smokers can transfer the virus from their cigarettes on their hands, if the tobacco plants were infected.

Im a smoker, and have never taken precautions with my tom plants and been fine so far (a few years on the trot). I don't worry too much about it

Tabacco infection? That sounds like a bit of a stretch.
Tobacco for sale in this country is heavily processed. In some cases it's as far removed from the tobacco plant as ketchup is from a tomato.
For example: Tailor made/ready rolled cigarettes are so heavily processed and subject to so many highly toxic chemical aditives I am confident that no germs of any kind exist in the tobacco, and it is never touched by human hand at any point from manufacture to consumption.
Rolling tobacco has far less processing and pipe tobacco less still but all are dried and some are conditioned (by smoke actually).
Is this a real concern? Should I be banning smoking at my society becasue of risk of infection?
(Please lets take as read any health risks).
Should this be a new tread? I could call it Yellow (tomato) fingers! :)

and I'm told that the risk is also from/to nicotine (nicotiana (sp?) ) plants that are popular in the garden.
