HELP please...poorly chicken
« on: November 11, 2008, 12:50 »
I'd be really grateful if somebody could give me so advise please.  I have a poorly chicken at home (1 of 3), she is a 10 month old Isa Brown and this morning when I opened their coop she practically fell out and just lay on one side, I picked her up and stood her up inside the run and she just sat there.  I picked her up out of the run and put her in the garden with the other two where she just sat.  I left the run and watched her from a distance where she started to move around more and eat a little.  My partner has just called to say he has brought into the house as she is just sat doing nothing.  She also has a very swollen front crop, we've checked her for mites etc but cannot see anything.

Can anybody help? x

Hi Sarah

Is her crop squishy to feel or hard?
Was it like that first thing when you let her out?
Have you seen her eat/drink?

Hi Sarah

Her crop is quite hard to feel and was like that first thing as well.  We've not seen her eat or drink so far but my partner is just cooking up some pasta for her now to see if she's interested in that.

It is possible that she has an impacted crop :?
When this happened to one of mine I trickled in some oil and gave it a gentle massage to try & loosen it.
If it is smelly when you open her beak it might be that the corn etc... has started to ferment :(
If I remember correctly then Live yogurt is good for this :?

I doubt very much she will eat the pasta if her crop is full :?

I shall have a look through past posts for more info about this and will get right back to you :D

The oil seems to be doing the trick.  My partner has said that she seems to have perked up and is now drinking more.

Thank you for the advice - I will keep you posted x
