Worm in Victoria Plums, should I eat them?!!!!
« on: July 15, 2022, 19:58 »
Hi

Sadly for first year my lovely crop of plums is affected by the plum moth.

When I open the fruit it has just one wriggly worm inside.

I am reluctant to throw all the fruit away so my question is, if I get rid of the worm, will there be more worms hidden in each piece of fruit (I haven't seen any more than one in each plum) and then if I rinse the plum will it be ok to eat? I have actually had a couple but not sure this is sensible! !!!

Thanks
Wendy

Hi Wendy, I'm no expert but experienced this the first year with plums on a tree inherited on my new plot. Almost half had worms when cut into and I didn't eat any with worms. The next year I left plums until really ripe and found fewer worms, probably because they had fallen off due to the worm eating the fruit??? I forgot to get a moth trap again this year so will be doing the same and waiting.

I would not hesitate to eat them , the only thing worse than finding a worm is finding half a worm . ::)

I used to put a net around the tree ( free range hens underneath) shake the tree daily and the plums would roll towards the trunk, the earliest ripening fruit was nearly always wormy but the quality improved in later shakings.
If jam making I would use only top quality fruit because of the work involved in making a batch.

I'd inspect them carefully, before eating, cutting open any suspect ones, to see what's what..

I would cut them in half and check before eating.
If they were quite bad I’d consider making them into jam
