Hi All

Very excited abot the new half of plot and have decided we can fit 8 beds of 10' x 6'.

I have some untreated scaffold boards which are 9" high and was wonderring if I should bury
them about 4" deep and leave 5" showing for bed edging and adding organic mature in the future.

Is that too high??

height of bed depends on personel pref i think ours are classed as being disabled friendly as their just over 2 foot high so very little bending required 4 of them are 21 foot long and another 2 are 16 foot thankfully there only 5 foot wide (the allotment society put in 7 of these plots not our own work)  its the width that is a problem for most people make sure you can reach the middle of it comftably

That sounds great. Im looking at putting in some stepping stones into the middle so they will only realyl be 3' wide

I have done mine at 5" deep to start and going to add when I have money.

I wouldn't bury the edges at all - the stakes should hold them in place and if you bury them the wood will rot that much quicker. 9" is a good height - you don't have to fill it all at once.

I have 12 raised beds made from scaffolding boards. We lowered the soil around them (putting the earth into the raised beds) so they are completely above ground level. Tis means that they shouldn't rot as quickly, and means that we can treat them with preservative. Had bumper crops last year when everyone else failed. You can grow anything in them, including potatoes, which the oldies down the lottie pooh poohed.

why do you need raised beds? If drainage a problem, put drainage channels in first. What are you going to fill them with?

My scaffolding board edges sit on top of the soil. Filling them is something that you need to give thought to - but you can do that over time. Think about the width of your beds - the middle needs to be accessible. The height of the beds might have more to do with your personal preference than anything else. Good luck.
