Sweet peppers in Greenhouse
« on: May 12, 2007, 17:06 »
I have 6 strong sweet peppers grown in the greenhouse and I have 2 huge pots full of compost waiting.
I am thinking of putting 2 in each; but if nobody wants the other 2, could I put 3 in each pot and hope for the best?
They are about 3 inches high now ......... is this about right for potting on?
I have frames for them bought very cheaply at Aldi but I've not been able to find out for sure if they need this support.
Any advice gratefully received :D    :D

I don't think they need support.  Maybe a bamboo cane at most.

That said, I'm trying them for the first time this year myself.  I am planning one pepper per 25litre drum.  Some might only get 15litre buckets.

OK David, We might compare notes after the harvest.
And I will use the frames for some more tomatoes instead:D

Last year mine didn't need support until the weight of the peppers got too much, then they definitely did need some support to stop them falling over. I jut used some bamboo canes.

As for how many in a pot it depends on just how big your pots are. Mine went one plant per 12" diameter pot last year. Don't know if that's right, but I got a great crop so I'll be doing the same again this year.

I'm just about to move mine into their final pots, they're about 8" tall at the moment.

I put my sweet peppers in a 6 " pot when they are 2 - 3 " tall and then put them in a cool g/house I do support them when fruit is made.
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.

Last year we grew our peppers in the poly tunnel and managed 103 from 6 plants before we had enough and pulled them - might have got a few more if my OH had been more patient!!!
Thats another story - veg and flowers are terrified of her as she is in a rush for anything - our neighbour came this evening for a qucik dram and commented that some plants he had given the OH were not up to standard and she needed to frighten them more!!!!
Even the french understand her now............

James 419 I thought when I read your posting WOW that's a lot of peppers, but then I noticed where you live... You have much better weather over there than we do here in good old Lancashire. Its constantly rain and more rain here facing Pendle hill. We can travel to the next town and its sunny. Hope you have the same success this year.

    :D Oh, I see I thought we'd only get a few peppers per plant (That sounds good dunnit?)
But about how many did you get per plant please?

Well Shaun, I can never get the MBs down enough and John did it for me.
It was when I played the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz.
My Email knows how to do it so I'll send you it by PM.
