Siting a greenhouse in a shady spot
« on: March 02, 2013, 19:38 »
I've cleared an untidy corner in the garden and have just enough room to put up a  6x8 greenhouse.  Problem is that it will be on the North side of next door's 2 metre high hedge, which at this time of the year casts a shadow on the ground where the greenhouse would be sited.  Basically, the top of the greenhouse would catch any sun, but the bottom would be almost permanently in shade.
Is putting a greenhouse in this situation worth the effort and expense?

I have a 6X6 greenhouse at home which is north of an old outhouse, which is about a foot taller than the greenhouse- this was the only location available. I use it mostly for raising seedlings and I get just about enough light...

My neighbour's is on the North side of a 6ft fence and gets enough light and heat to grow seedlings and tomatoes in the summer :)
She did have it raised on a row or 2 of bricks so that the apex of the back end, which is nearest the fence, gets some sun.

It's dank and lifeless in the winter but because of the height of the sun it's ok in summer and still gets hot inside ;)

I'd always have one even if it couldn't be in an ideal position. A shady, cooler part of the garden will produce more under glass than it would without. :)

Kell I am in a similar position and am also thinking a greenhouse in a less than ideal location is better than no greenhouse at all.
