Ive not been able to find any around me that grows wild and it is near impossible to buy in even specialist shops. Yet it is such a wonderful ingredient - have had it in restaurants many times and loved it. So can you get seeds for it? I have looked at the main online seed shops but to no avail.

I've tried growing it from seed with no success and I dug up a few small plants (naughty boy) from a woodland area I know and they died. It seems to be very particular about the kind of environment it will grow in. I think the seeds were from Victoriana Nursery Gardens.

I believe that foraging for ransoms (wild garlic) is not illegal, but check who's land it is before doing so.
Yes they do like a very particular site and I would never advocate taking much from any single plant and although in today's supermarket world it probably is not particularly worrisome, don't tell anyone how good they are.

At my old house I rather cheekily dug some bulbs up from the local wood and planted them in dappled shade at home. They came up next year. The patch I dug them up from was huge I have to say. But, I don't know of the legality of what I did, perhaps someone can enlighten me.

None of my seeds germinated and I thought I would be faced to a life without wild garlic but fortunately my son has moved to a house with a garden filled with it. Guess who is going round at the weekend with a trowel? ::)

Many, many years ago Mum, with encouragement from me ( I didn't know much about growing stuff back then ;) ) dug some up from by the stepping stones at box hill, and it's done quite well in dry shade, but it does much better in damp shade, as witness the size of the leaves and bulbs that I dug up from my lotty after just one year there. I wouldn't call it particularly particular. :tongue2:

My sister has a woody side to her garden and there is a little brook running through it. She is over-run with wild garlic and bluebells. Trouble is the dogs use it as a latrine....yuk! What a shame. :(

I don't have garden envy....much. I know what I would put there if it was mine, and the dogs would be banned! It would look great with chooks scratching around! :D

Apparently, wild garlic likes similar conditions as bluebells. It seem to tally with what I've seen in the wild. Shady and damp.
I've also taken a few plants out of my Moms garden and planted them in mine, down by the stream. They're dying down now... or at least I hope its that and not "dying" properly!
