I find it is the least attractive to them but it doesn't stop them!!  One year I left kale uncovered in autumn and it was basically fine until it snowed, then the pigeons could not find much else!

Sweetpea, either trays or modules will work since it will give the plants a good start and no wasted space in the plot of seeds that didn't germinate.

I'm trying 3 varieties this year, Siberian, Red Ursa and Sutherland as a comparison. All flat leaf varieties as they are easy to wash. All very vigorous and tasty started in modules planted out qiute small under nets, a small amout of slug damage around the periferal plants. So far like the red ones best as they are most attractive to look at. I've only watered them for the first 2 weeks until they were established.

I like kale shredded and stir-fried with and onion. Also great in soups ect in the winter. I'm dehdrating it for the 1st time, though I'm hoping for a steady winter crop too.

Over here it's known as farmer's cabbage and there's a lovely traditional recipe called stampot which uses kale. We can't wait to get stuck into a (vegetarian) stampot once the autmn nights really draw in. We use veggie rookwurst and tempeh instead of rookwurst and bacon.

Don't forget bubble and squeak or colcannon-type dishes - kale comfort food - I love it!
I was lost without any black Tuscan kale last year when I didn't net it and lost it all to caterpiddlers snd pigeons!

The stampot recipe looks nice i love a good winter soup/stew/broth, im not for these a la carte meals give me a nice big tasty meal anyday  no pureed soups either thats just wrong  if the wife pureed one of my soups i think that would be grounds for a divorce 
Im going to see if i can get some different kale seeds today,put them in alongside some siberian seeds and see what happens,its a bit of a shame about the siberian plants as they are big leafed nice looking plants.
