Anyone tried seed tape for carrots?
« on: November 22, 2023, 19:11 »
Lidl have all seeds down to 20p, so bought a couple of packets of Early Nantes carrots in a seed tape. 5 metres long and seems to have 3 seeds every inch or so. I’m hoping this avoids the need for much thinning to avoid attracting carrot fly. What are people experiences or tips for using this.

My friend uses seed tape in his garden. He rarely has to thin too much he finds, just the odd one here and there.

Thanks for the heads up Nobbie, I'll call in to Lidl tomorrow. I've never had much luck with carrots. The leaves always make it look like it's going to be a monster, but when it's pulled up there's not much root

I have used one before but didn't have much success with it. I think I didn't get it in contact with the underlying earth enough, so it dried out. If care is taken, it should be fine - I think I've ordered some this year to try next season.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I’ve tried them in the past with little success for possibly the same reason as Yorkie

Never had much luck with tape or carrots
The carrots grow fine, huge amount of foliage, but pull em up, a spindly thing at the end
I've thinned them out, jumped on the weeds as they start to sprout
I tried beetroot tape, cut it up into suitable lengths, never got anything from them
Now I just open a packet and scatter them, rake them in and let them get on with it
It's all about the journey, not the destination
