In Praise of Autumn King 2
« on: March 11, 2012, 21:29 »
Each year for the past 3 I have sown Autumn King 2 Carrots under Enviromesh. I want to say what a great Carrot they are. I sow cheap packet's of AK2 from Wilkos in the last week of May, water in and then leave them under the Mesh until October when the Mesh gets lifted and I start to Harvest.

I don't water again unless its very dry for the 1st month after sowing and I don't lift the mesh to weed for fear of the fly getting in. The weeds do grow a lot but they don't seem to hamper the Carrots growth & I don't have to worry about my crop being destroyed by the Fly.

I leave the roots in all winter and they just sit there waiting to be harvested, they over winter great and I am still picking them and they are still delicious. The slugs have chomped on them over winter but not to any great extent.

What a great Carrot they are & I can't easily think of another crop that takes so little time and last's outside throughout the winter whilst still maintaining its taste, 2 x 30 ft rows have fed us from October until now and we still have about 4 more meals left in the ground.
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

i really, really, really need to buy some enviromesh or similar as mine always go the way they do each year!!!!

Home grown carrots are just the best thing arent they (when not infested with maggots of course!!!!)

You took your time, but welcome to the club, fatbelly.

You have to grow AK, there's no other carrot that I've found can touch its flavour.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I've done well with AK and an old packet of seed too  :)  Not recommended of course but I sowed them into a tub with few expectations and was hugely pleased with the result

Sounds good my big aim this year is to try and provide something off the plot all year round!

I sow some AK in September and keep them under the mesh all winter. It seems to provide a perfect micro-climate and they are brilliant all through the winter.

Just a few left now  :(
