Autumn King 2
« on: June 12, 2009, 09:32 »
Hi I sowed some carrots about 7 weeks ago and only two have came up  ::)

A fellow plotter said its not to late to sow Autumn King 2 carrots and they would be fine. Is it too late and has anyone any experience of sowing so far in the season

What I usually do is make a rather larger drill than normal and line it with potting compost.  In go the carrot seeds, a little more compost on top, replace the soil and gently pat everything down.

This way the carrots germinate in an ideal environment and by the time the roots hit the actual soil they are strong enough to deal with it.

(The one row on my plot which have germinated badly is the row I sowed when I could not be bothered with the compost!)

Cheers,

Gillie

I like the sound of that gillie, mine have also been a failure this year five rows and only about six carrots showing. Will give it an other try as I'm off to lotty now to plant on sweet corn and sow the carrots :)

I sowed Autumn king throughout July last year and they formed my winter supply which I stored in sand/compost in boxes in the greenhouse

Last year I thought I had loads of carrots not germinating when in reality they were but the slugs were eating them before they had a chance to develop at all.  Then, when I could beat the slugs the dreaded carrot fly got them.  This year I'm growing most of my carrots in containers at home, 2 feet off the ground, although I have a resistafly variety I'm going to sow shortly.
