onions and leeks
« on: May 30, 2019, 08:24 »
I need some advise because  I'm not sure if one can  use a nitrogen fertilizer for onion and leek crops because I've always used a balanced fertilizer not a nitrogen based fertilizer for top dressing

Onions do need Nitrogen to grow a good rack of leaves before mid Summer, when they then will begin to bulb up slowly. Chicken manure pellets scratched into the surface is as good as any, and watered in if conditions are dry. Leeks are mainly leaf too of course, and so do ned a fair bit of Nitrogen. Seaweed meal is a pretty good all rounder I find

I also usually add a thin top dressing/sprinkle of Epsom Salts around now, to strengthen cell wall growth (hoping to stave off rusts and mildews) as well as a flavour boost with the sulphate

I have had success fertilizing allium crops with pelleted chicken manure.

Leeks love comfrey and nettle drinks, Rowland.

The awful smelly stuff just soaks into the folds on the leaves, (the pong/colour doesn't stay there when you harvest them), and they'll boom ahead like - well, a huge boomer!

Mrs Growster and I used to feed them every week, and they just sang their hearts out!
