Post by: markp76 on June 07, 2010, 14:02
Is it to late to plant sweetcorn seeds? I over watered the 1's i have and the stems rotted on most just leaving me wih the 5 plants, Doh! so popped to the garden centre {well 3} this weekend to see if they had any cheat plants but NOOOOOOOOO but picked up a packet of mini pop as it said on the back i can still plant in to mid June can i expect a reasonable crop leaving them this late?

I'd try!
Looking at the Which? trial from a few years ago, their best result was sown direct 26 May, and even sown direct 20 June still produced a good harvest.
Go for it!

Make sure you choose a seed that crops "quickly".

I like Swift F1 (sounds like it ought to be quick, eh? <Boom!Boom!>) both for flavour and speed.

Old fashioned tall types won't make a decent cob given a whole summer, let alone a foreshortened one

It was "Swift" they used in the trial so sounds like a really good idea.

Ofcourse you can plant sweetcorn now still. Thats the quick and simple answer.

I don't think it quit that simple ... but ask two gardeners are you get three answers ...

For example, the instructions on the back of my packet of Swift gives End of May as the last sowing date ...

Sweetcorn is not native to the UK and in Britain even the specially developed F1 strains need a decent summer to fulfill their potential, although it obviously makes a difference whether you live in Jersey or Aberdeen!

The later you leave it the more you are relying on luck; how's yours?  ;)

On Sunday I had 50 good looking sweet corn waiting to go to the plot  - checked last night and two smug slugs so fat they can hardly creep away had feasted on half of them. So last night it was sow replacements and put them where the raiding party cant get them! I reckion the hedgehogs in the garden are on a go slow either that or that are on a diet :D
