hello im new to this and i really need someones help, my cream leg bar has got a lump just above her eye. i was wondering if there is anything i can do, the lump is quite hard but she is still eating and drinking can someone tell me what i can do or what it is , thanks

hmmm. I am thinking sebaceous cyst. If she had any sort of splinter, or gunk get into her eye, or into the skin above her eye, it could have started an infection. Chickens are really strange, in that their 'pus' sort of goes like toothpaste, then calcifies into a large lump. Once calcified, it just leaves a lump. However, if the lump is sqidgey, it could be pus. Has she got a temp? feel under her wings and see if she feels about the same as the others. If she is hot, she might have an infection and be in need of anti-biotics.

It is not a sebaceous cyst. Birds don't have sebaceous glands but their preening gland close to their tail - is very similar.

However, it could be an encapsulated cyst or tumour, these feel quite hard but are smooth and  usually painless although there will be discomfort due to pressure. These grow over a month or so.

If the lump has developed over a period of days, then is it likely be an infection of sorts,
maybe caused originally by a scratch or foreign object.

The other possiblity would be a sinus infection linked usually to an upper respiratory infection, the lump would generally be more of a "swelling" accompanied by other respiratiory symptoms such as frothy or bubby eye, discharge from nostrils and generally depressed behaviour.

I think it is worth taking the bird to a vet for a once over.
