Chopped rape stalks
« on: December 20, 2016, 14:11 »
Talking to a client the other day who keeps horses, he did have rescue hens but they have all died off and his wife did not want to keep hens any longer :(

He is buying chopped rape as bedding for the horses and I wondered if this would be good for hens :). We both agreed that Straw is nice :), but so difficult to get rid of, shavings too are nice but then take ages to rot down :(. He seemed to think this rape would be better as it rots down very well. :)

Anyone tried it??
rip Sandy, rip Beryl, Henrietta

Know what would be nice in your garden, a few hens lol

I haven't but it comes up every so often on here.  If you do a search on the main hen house page for Rapport, lots of threads will come up.

The other one that lots of people like is Hemcore.  There are loads of threads on that  :)

We use it and it's lovely. The aroma is sweet and it rots well, especially in the hotbin.

I use Hemcore in both nest boxes and coop. Cosy enough for egglaying, and super absorbent. Makes poo picking easy because it clumps.  All goes onto the compost.

Just concerned the thread could be misinterpreted. To clarify hemcore and aubiose are made from hemp which is not rape straw. Apologies if it is just me, it is Christmas eve after all.  :D

Merry Christmas to all  :)

Got some Aubiose the other day, quite cheap at £10.00 odd, looks very good and if it rots down well will be a cheaper and better alternative to shavings. :)
