Celeriac-a mass of foliage
« on: September 10, 2012, 17:36 »
I thought that I was doing really well with my celeriac which were planted in a well manured, regularly watered bed. The foliage is up to 2ft high with a mass of celery smelling leaves. In fact it almost looks like celery. However, although the bases seem nearly as wide as a good sized celeriac , the bulbs do not seem to be expanding. I thought that with root veg the idea was that healthy good foliage then puts all its energy in to growing a big root! I am a novice I am afraid. To top it all, I think that there are signs on a few plants that they may be about to bolt!

Any suggestions would be welcome!

Celeriac is the only veg where the opposite is true. As the plant grows, you need to keep trimming off outer leaves so only a few grow in the centre to feed the root which will swell up more if there's a minimum of leaves to support.

If you plan to leave the celeriac out for a while yet, start trimming off leaves now, leaving about 3-4 per plant.

Thanks. That's helpful. Now I know where I went wrong. I was worried about loosing outside stems, so I tied them all in a bunch for a while to stop the outer one collapsing.

I am going out with a knife now.

Some of my celeriac leaves have gone brown then paper dry and crumbly, like tomatoes after blight - what gives? Hessayon supplies no answers though hints at some kind of blight through celery leaf spot.

They can get a type of blight, as well as a leaf spot that turns them brown.

So, carefully pick off infected leaves and bin them. Try not to touch the good leaves with the browned ones, just in case it is the blight problem. As long as the centre leaves are green, the bulb is still fine.

So much foliage - so little 'fruit'.
