Asparagus sprouting again
« on: September 15, 2009, 09:14 »
i take it this is not normal and its just the weather playing havoc with the plants?
these are 1yo crowns which went in nov last year. been very strong willed and not cut any this season  ::) ::)
the question i take it i still can't cut for eating until next spring? and do you think it will still crop ok even after sprouting twice this year.
this is my fav and the anticipation is killing me
cheers
oh no, another pair of leaky wellies!

I put my 40 1 year old crowns in March. Some of mine have sent up new spears in the last week. Good sign I'd say of a strong plant.

Let these whither and turn brown. Cut 2cm or so above the soil.

I'm not cutting any next year even though you can cut a few to try and encourage a real strong future crop.

Put some muck over the winter for future feed and as a mulch.

A bit of Grow More in Spring would help as well.
Top tip for camping....don't go.

I've got four beds of 5 plants each. Two early, two late.  All planted in April this year.

I've noticed a couple of new shoots in the early beds last week or so.  I'd like to think that it is the sign of a strong plant too.  However I was hoping that I'll start to see my new ferns going brown in the next few weeks.

I hope the new shoots turn brown soon enough as I assume that it is the plant beneath the soil that is sending the instruction to the ferns to die off so it should affect all shoots even the new ones.

I too will abstain from cutting this spring.  I've lasted this long without fresh picked Asparagus I can just about last another season.  Just.
