Hi,
I bought a (reduced) asparagus and rhubarb from Asda last night, they seemed so dried and shriveled in the pack I took them to the customer service desk to ask if they were dead. They of course didn’t know but assured me if they were I could bring them back lol. Anyway do I soak these in water overnight, im looking at a pile of barky dust and a slight sign of a white asparagus head, no sign of green shoots or the like. The packaging says just to plant them but I think that’s bull and they need a good soak. Is this the right was to re-hydrate plants? If they do turn out to be dead, Asda will be getting some mucky shoots leaving on their service desk with a receipt pinned to them lol!

Hi,
 It sounds to me as if there is no hope on these.
Even soaking them would do no good I think you should take them back and tell them they are dead.
I suppose you could try to revive them but I think you will be wasting your time.
In my experience  supermarkets dont keep the plants in the right sort of conditions I bought some tomato plants from tesco and they died the next day also I got a rose plant from Aldi and that never grew.
Stick to garden centre plants Id say

This is not the time of year to be planting rhubarb or asparagus, they should have been in the ground months ago. In fact it is nearly time to stop harvesting asparagus.

Shame on them for selling them, albeit at a reduced price!
