Trailing dianthus cuttings
« on: March 29, 2011, 14:12 »
Last year I got some trailing dianthus which did really well. Due to illness, they were left out in a little hanging basket but have survived the minus C15 temps over winter..! I wanted to take some cuttings but there was no real softwood but I found that I could pull off the new shoots from the woody stem like as in hardwood cuttings. I put them in hormone rooting powder and firmed them in pots of compost. They look perky enough so far - do you think it will work..??
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Can't see why not, I've had no problem in the past taking hardwood cuttings, give the bottom end a slanted cut and dip in hormone rooting powder.

Compost wouldn't be my first choice of rooting medium, I prefer a mix of perlite/vermiculite, moss and potting soil as it's a touch lighter than compost and holds water better.

Should work though, good luck.

I notice that's where all my new shoots come from so I'm sure your cuttings will do fine as dianthus are so tough and I don't even take mine inside and they survive -25C winters here. Mind, they do get snow cover.
