We throw al the ashes on the compost heap. There are some minerals but I am not sure which ones. From what I understand it is quite alkaline and we also have chicken droppings on it so maybe a good balance in the end?

I put mine around the garlic, on the onion bed and on the heap.

Hello. Here -acidic soil- I use them almost everywhere. But especially on brassicas, onion family, and stone fruit trees - plums, cherries etc.
Hope that helps.

I do as Toosje does and mix them into the compost heap. Helps sweeten the compost if there's been any anaerobic composting and the heaps slightly acidic.

as we burn only wood  we have collected quite a few bags overwinter  I've taken them down the allotments for my onion bed if it ever stops raining for me to finish cultivating the ground

Wood ash: using in the garden
Ash from wood fires, such as bonfires or wood burning stoves, can be a useful additive to the compost heap or can be applied directly to fallow ground and dug in. It can be a natural source of potassium and trace elements. It also has a liming effect, so wood ash can remedy excessively acidic soils.
This has been taken from the RHS site:-  https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=621   and there is a lot more information about wood ash. My elders always said, 'never use it fresh and nvere let it get wet'.

It has plenty of uses as been said my potatoes love it but just make sure the ashes come from virgin untreated wood
