Miki very poorly, he had to go to vet
« on: February 18, 2012, 16:05 »
Miki, our big kitten, started being sick last night, continued thus morning. He was drinking and tgem bringing it up 5 min later. I rang the emergency vet, he was at a swimming gala with his son, but we saw him later on.  Miki had an xray, showed up small bones in gut, no temperature. Vet said more than likely Miki ate an animal that was dead for a while.  He gave Miki 2 injections, no food/ water today, only aqualias (?) water, 1ml every hour.  He has prescription food for tomorrow.  The bill was 65€, the consultation 35€, xray 20€ the 2 injections were 6€ the tinned food made up the rest. Just wondered, what do the vets charge for that sort of treatment in the UK?

I don't know but it wouldn't surprise me to find that they charge far more than that for an emergency weekend trip
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hi Pauline, just an emergency appointment was £50 a year ago and that was without any treatment.
The reward of a thing well done is to have done it....

I was very recently charged over £300 for a consultation, xray under sedation and a weeks worth of antibiotics. A practice manager at a nearby practice said it should have been half that amount. I think they inflated the price knowing my cat was insured. Your vet sounds very reasonable compared to mine :)

It does make you wonder about charges. For a cat to be spayed it is 150€ at Thι vet we used today. A vet in Antequera, an hour away, charges 125€, a vet in my friends village charges 95€, he is 1 1/2 hours away. Shame he is so far.

What I object paying for was the 'passport' book, I was charges 10€ for just the book!

I'm not sure how much regulation there is on what vets charge. Very little would be my guess. We could go further afield and find a cheaper vet but my cat gets so stressed in the car I just can't put her through that to save a bit of cash. I wouldn't mind but the xray I paid for was of no help in diagnosing my cat. I will have to go to a specialist vet for MRI's etc. My cat is insured for £4000 but an mri and scope would probably use that money up in no time.  I have heard of so many animals put to sleep because owners could not find the money needed. It is terribly sad but I do not know what the solution is.

Miki was sick again today,, while we were out for a walk.  I am still giving him water every hour.  He ate a little special food at 7am but turns up his nose now. He is back to the vet tomorrow for another injection.
My cousin lives in France, her dogs, brothers, are epileptic, it costs her a fortune for medication.
Miki is just washing himself, is that a good sign?

Sorry to hear Miki is poorly. It could be that whatever he ate had died of poisoning so if he is no better tomorrow it might be worth getting in touch with the vet again. Hope he is feeling better soon.

We had to take Miki back for another injection this morning. He was quite perky this morning but was sick again about 30 min after he ate a tiny bit of special meat.  He hasn't eaten furthest of the day and this evening is just sitting down.  I am still giving him the 'energy' water every hour or so.  I might try
him on a tiny bit of fresh tuna (cooked) it might encourage him to eat.
Animals are such a worry, if only we knew what the dope had eaten!

It might work if he normally likes tuna. If I have a poorly cat I tend to stick to bland foods like boiled fish or chicken in small amounts to begin with. I hope he feels better soon.

Found some chicken in the freezer so cooking that. Miki is a lot more alert at the moment. We had been out for a couple of hours, I was worried as to what we would find, instead Miki was at the door to greet us  :D

Miki is tucking into boiled chicken  :D he has hardly eaten for 3 days. He won't be wanting to go back to his biscuits and tinned cat food after he is better
