We planted our peas & broad beans about about a week ago.

A lot of the peas seem to be dying, the leaves and stems going a whitish cream colour and shrivelling - any ideas??

The broad beans seem to have black tips which look like choc spot may be developing

It sounds as if the peas are suffering from scorching.  Have you been watering in full sun    Mmmmmmmm  ?

Is the white a powdery substance (powdery mildew) or is it the actual stems and leaves?

It's not white powdery, its more the actual leaves and plant discolouring and dying. We've been mostly watering from the bottom this year although I guess we could have watered them from the top as they grew more substantial.  Scorching sounds feasible.

The bean black bits are at the ends of leaves on both tiny plants and larger plants, from the exact tip of the leaf and is quite black.

Peas that have been raised inside are easily scorched if put out without sufficient hardening off. Just strong sunlight will do it. Wind does not help.

The blackening of the bean leaves is probably stress on transplanting.

Beans usually recover. Peas sometimes just give up.

Yes, I fear you are right about the transplanting, my husband put the peas in in a rush on a really hot day and the next day was a turn in the weather and they got buffetted by some cross garden wind 

We have some more coming on and will take care when putting out.

As for the beans, they are on the tips of the small plants not yet planted out.  We just don't have much luck growing them - they might be on the 'may not bother growing them next year' thread soon!
