dont want to hijack the thread and put a relevent question as well.
with the winter onions stalks looking beautiful can we chop couple of leaves (atmost one from a plant) to make salads?
will it affect the quality of the bulb?

One leaf per plant shouldn't take too much out of making the bulb swell prakash_mib.

Depends on variety and conditions but probably about 10-12 weeks I'd imagine.

I sow them in trays like leeks, no earthing up. The bulbs sit about half in half out of the soil.

That's actually what I thought when I saw the question. I thought I'd just give a simple answer though!

I can see your thinking to make leeks longer and whiter they go in deep and don't people earth up leeks.  Would it do the same with spring onions give you a nice longer white onion stalk
Thanks
Kris

I must admit to have never hearing of anyone earthing up spring onions. Unlike leeks, you get a decent white bit above the ground anyway and you'd have to earth up a long way to increase the length of this white bit.

Is there anything wrong with a bit of greenery on a spring onion, rather than just plain boring white?

I'm growing spring onions for the first time for many years and the way they are performing at the moment if I earthed them up they would completely disappear!  :(  ;)

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

mine are a bit pathetic looking as well, they germinated when we had the warm spell in April and I think they have regretted it ever since
