Pickled Beetroot
« on: September 30, 2009, 21:12 »
Hi all
I recently pickled some beetroot , about a month ago to be nearly precise, when i opened it the other day it just smelt and tasted of the vinager, not nice at all. Anyway, i have used the correct jars and i sterilized them first but i used just normal white distilled malt vinager, is that the wrong sort.

I think that's pretty rough stuff. It's worth paying a bit more for a decent malt or wine vinegar.  You're going to be eating it, after all   :)

Give it more time, the vinegar matures and mellows out. 8)

I add sugar to mine as well, tastes much nicer to me.  I use malt vinegar for pickled beetroots and distilled vinegar for red tomato chutney as it help to keep the colour bright.

I put a tablespoon of sugar to a pint of vinegar.  It sounds a lot but i dont drink the vinegar

I cant see why the distilled vinegar wont be ok.  I would use it if it was what I had.

Don't like puyying sugar in everything, but maybe it could do with just a hint of something sweet . .  ???

I must admit I wasn't keen, but it certainly seems to have worked.
