Fruit trees

I need some fruit trees on dwarfing root stock.  But they are expensive.  Could I get away with buying cheap ones on normal rootstock, if I trim them right.  Or will it be a losing battle.

if I trim them right

That is the key and yes, if you are really on the ball with the pruning, you can get away with it.

Commercial orchards do this as the more vigorous rootstocks produce trees with lots of side branches.  This helps them train the trees the way they want them, which is sometimes odd shapes, like an S shape trained between wire supports.  Free standing trees can be quite wasteful on space and most commercial crops have moved away from this now.

Also look up renewal pruning for bush trees.  This is another way of growing where they only have 4/5 main branches on a tree, let side shoots fruit for a few years, then cut them out completely to regenerate the tree with fresh fruiting wood.

There is a fair bit on YouTube about it as well as general articles on 'tinternet.  Here's 1 link that might be useful

And our B&M had masses of trees @ £4.99 each this morning... not on named rootstocks but said to grow 3m tall...  :D
