New year of potatoes
« on: January 12, 2024, 13:18 »
Dear fellow gardener,

Last year I grew my first potatoes in bags. I am still a learning newbie and some potato variety did better than the other. I have ordered new seed potatoes and have two questions:
How many times do I use potato fertiliser?
At what stage of the growth do I spray for  blight?

Would love to hear from you?

as we use growbag compost in our potato tubs we don't add any fertilizer and never spray for blight anyway good luck with your veg growing we all had to start somewhere if you need to get any advise just ask us on this site

I am lazy and just add a handful of potato fertiliser at the point of planting.

I think others are more conscientious and add it when they earth up  :)

I would not routinely spray for blight. I am not even sure whether there are many legal products on the market in England / UK

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I grew pots in tubs last year and sprinkled some blood, fish and bone in the soil when planting. I did add some more general fertilizer pellets in about the end of May. I didn't spray for blight and didn't have any, but it usually starts in July depending on the humidity so I'd use a fungicide in maybe end of June.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I only grow first and second earlies as they finish before blight hits. If you cure second earlies they can last many months in a sack. Charlotte is hard to beat. You also have time for a second crop of something to follow them, leeks being the classic

There are blight resistant varieties, any of the sarpo ones are blight resistant
