Ant Attack - Advice Please
« on: June 07, 2011, 15:48 »
Making good progress on my plot now. Have removed the majority of weeds but I am being held up by some very aggressive ants.

They are a light brown mahogany colour and boy do they have a bite on them.

Whilst removing some weeds I noticed loads white eggs being moved by millions of theses ants. So I moved to another area of the plot at least 3 meters away, when all of a sudden I felt a sharp pinch on the inside of my wrist. There was an ant nipping away at me and more of the eggs being moved on the ground.

The question is do I keep moving round the plot regularly to avoid being eating and work in harmony with the critters (as best as poss) or do I get rid of them and if so how?

Get rid of them with a propriotary ant killer/destroyer.

Most people get this problem every year and they are a nightmare.
They also farm afids on trees (etc), get rid/kill them

I dont worry about them in my garden too much but I have an elderly relative who really hates them. I have used bait pots this year at her house rather than powders or sprays and they has been much much more sucessful. Buy at any ironmongers etc but protect pots once activated from rain by a slate or cover.

My plot is sectioned into 3 big beds, this particular bed has the problem but then it is full of fruit bushes so I can see the attraction for the ants.

I intend to put weed membrane down and wood chippings with the hope that the area will look after itself to an extent. Just need to clear the weeds first but as fore mentioned the ants are holding up progress and there is still a long way to go.

Will definately take your advice and get shot of them, I keep thinking they've gone up my trousers and get funny looks walking home like i've got, well, ants in my pants!

Many Thanks Guys :)

Red ants are nasty and painful.

Don't worry too much about getting rid of them - the total biomass of ants in the world is greater than the biomass of all human beings, so they're not an endangered species.

I can highly recommend bait poison (either traps or u can get v cheap liquid gel saches online). Let the ants eat it (they will swarm but don't kill them). They then take it back to the nest and they all get poisoned. One of the easier pests to nuke I wager!
