Title: Brussel sprout question
Post by: vanessa.xx on July 29, 2013, 22:44
I'm growing brussel sprouts but I'm not sure what to do with them, the leaves are massive and little sprouts are growing in the leaf axels, do I remove the leaves? Im new to sprouts but saw other people's on the plot at the back end of last year and they were a big column of sprouts with leaves on top, I thought mine would grow up more to produce more column and then get sprouts but obviously not  sorry if this is such a noob question

The leaves grow first and the plant gets tall, then the sprouts start to form as you have found in the leaf axels. Don't remove the leaves while they look healthy , the plant will naturally shed the lower leaves as the sprouts form. Some varieties are taller than others, but among mine I have several different heights from the same variety.
Make sure the plants are firmly in the soil you might even want to use canes to support them as if they rock in the wind or become loose in the soil the sprouts will have a tendancy to blow, rather than be the neat buttons you want

I tend to find the lower leaves turn yellow so that's when to remove them  :)
