Frontline for chooks - yes or no
« on: May 04, 2012, 08:08 »
Hi.  My chooks do not currently have any mites etc, but I have read that some people treat their chooks with cat front line - what does everyone think!  thanks

As it isn't licensed for poultry I get mine from my vets. They prescribe the frontline spray and I have to sign for it.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Hi, I have used Xeno spot on pipettes which is for use on chickens on 2 occasions and have found it to be excellent. I bought it from the vets, you'll need the weights of your chooks to determine the dosage. I weighed them in a box on my bathroom scales!

Neither are licensed so when can you eat the eggs??

oops pressed reply by mistake lol!! I assumed (was I wrong?) that if a vet prescribed me something then it was fit for purpose. I have got Xeno twice from the vets in the last year or so. If I remember correctly there is an egg withdrawal period but can't remember for sure.

This subject is covered in the current edition of Country Smallholding magazine. Their vet does not give a withdrawal period for using Frontline as she would not recommend its use but clearly states the active ingredient will get into the egg/meat and should not be used for human consumption. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

When we got our 3 bantams they were covered in mites and the rooster had scaly leg mite (they were all in a pretty bad way), my vet prescribed IVERMECTIN DROPS 1% and it certainly did the job (along with vaseline on poor Boris' legs).  We asked about egg withdrawal and she said it would not be necessary. Having said that, they were not laying at the time so it was a moot point. :)
When I was young we used to go 'skinny dipping,' now I just 'chunky dunk.'

I use frontline on my hens. The vet is happy to supply the spray for my chickens.

I use frontline, too, but I have to say that we find it wise to destroy the eggs for a couple of days afterwards.  A slight metallic aftertaste has been noted!  No illness, but just not nice. Fine after two days for our pallette (sp?) though.  ;)
