Poultry spice should be mixed with their food as it is (generally) insoluble.

It is meant to be used as a tonic and "pick-me-up" so I wouldn't use it all the time

I think you can get it in liquid form as well - it really is just a tonic. Why not add a garlic clove or apple cider vinegar to their water.

with garlic I just flatten it with a knife, others may chop it and then put it in their drinker.
Apple cider vinegar is best if you get it from equestrian places - this is the proper stuff - the stuff from supermarkets has been purified. Mix 25mls with 1 litre of water and use for 4 out of 5 weeks. I have one drinker with ACV and one with garlic - they don't seem to have any preference and I'm not sure what if any good it is doing them but both me and my chickens are happy

Joy wot is the reason behind adding garlic to the water, is it something you put in everday,  i usually give mine ACV once a week.    Nickyx

Garlic has long been known to have many health benefits for humans including anti viral and anti fungal. Some people also say it also helps neutralize the smell of the chickens pooh although it doesn't seem to work on my broodies 
I know that chickens are a different species to humans (will say this before Hillfooter points this out    ) but it is an age old remedy used by chicken breeders for many many years.
